Our principal attorney is Jeffrey Isaac Ehrlich. Mr. Ehrlich is a cum laude graduate of the Harvard Law School, with over 20 years of civil litigation experience. He is certified as an appellate specialist by the California Board of Legal Specialization. Mr. Ehrlich’s litigation experience ranges from jury trials to arguing before the United States Supreme Court.
After law school, Mr. Ehrlich had the privilege of clerking for the Hon. Judith N. Keep, former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. From 1992 to 1996, Mr. Ehrlich worked in the Legal Division of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as an appellate lawyer in the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., representing the agency before federal appellate courts across the country.
Thereafter, Mr. Ehrlich left the government to begin building a private practice. For the last decade the focus of his practice has been insurance-related litigation on behalf of insurance policyholders.
He moved to Claremont, California in 1999 and joined Shernoff Bidart & Darras, LLP, California’s premier plaintiff’s insurance bad-faith firm. There, he headed the firm’s appellate practice group and supervised the bulk of the firm’s law-and-motion practice. In 2000, he was made partner in the firm.
Mr. Ehrlich has briefed or supervised the briefing in more than 175 appeals, and has argued more than 75 appeals in the state and federal courts throughout the United States. Mr. Ehrlich has argued in the United States Supreme Court, before seven of the 13 federal circuit courts of appeal, and six of the seven California courts of appeal.
Mr. Ehrlich is a member of the amicus committee of the Consumer Attorneys of California, and has authored briefs as amicus curiae on behalf of that organization in the California Supreme Court and the California Courts of Appeal. He has also authored amicus briefs on behalf of United Policyholders, CalPIRG, and other consumer organizations.
In 2005, Mr. Ehrlich was honored as the Appellate Lawyer of the Year by the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. He is an associate editor of that organization’s Advocate magazine, and edits the yearly issues on insurance and on appeals. His articles on insurance law, appeals, HMOs, arbitration, and other topics have been published in the Advocate, as well as in the Consumer Attorneys of California’s Forum, and the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
Mr. Ehrlich has been a featured speaker for consumer and business groups, including the American Association of Trial Lawyers, the Consumer Attorneys Association of California, the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, The Rutter Group, the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Legal Education Institute, Mealy’s, and the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel.
Mr. Ehrlich founded the Ehrlich Law Firm in 2006, and still works closely with Shernoff Bidart & Darras, LLP on many matters, providing appellate and litigation expertise.
